Redistricting in Pictures. See the maps!

Here is how redistricting based on the 2020 U.S. Census is set to affect Detroit’s eastside, including the Pointes and Harper Woods. Of course, these final maps are subject to any future court-mandated changes—less likely as time marches on. Check out all four linked maps.

First the good news: with a few exceptions, all five of the Pointes and Harper Woods are united in the same districts for representation in the U.S. Congress, Michigan Senate, Michigan House and Wayne County Commission. Also good for the Pointes is that the assigned Congressional District is completely within Wayne County.

Exceptions: for U.S. Congress, the Macomb County portion of Grosse Pointe Shores is sliced away and assigned to the 10th Congressional District which straddles Macomb and Oakland Counties.

Another exception to eastside unification is the Michigan House of Representatives map in which Harper Woods is assigned to the 11th State House District, which extends from a portion of Detroit northward through Harper Woods and incorporates St. Clair Shores in Macomb County.

Obviously, the Macomb County portion of Grosse Pointe Shores will vote for Macomb County Commissioners and not Wayne County Commissioners.

Every Michigan citizen is included in a district for U.S. Congress, Michigan Senate, Michigan House of Representatives and for representation in their respective county. For most of us in southeast Michigan, that would be the Wayne County Commission. Boundaries for each of these districts has been affected by the recently completed redistricting process.

Check out your district’s new boundaries in each of the maps linked below.

U.S. Congress: Michigan 13th District Map

With Michigan’s loss of one congressional district as a result of the 2020 U.S. Census, boundaries for each of the remaining 13 Michigan districts have been redrawn. The same is true for the Michigan Senate, House and County districts.

In addition to the Pointes, Harper Woods and most of Detroit, the 13th Congressional District includes Wayne, Romulus, Taylor, Allen Park, Lincoln Park, Melvindale, Southgate, Wyandotte, Ecorse, River Rouge, Highland Park and Hamtramck. The eastside U.S. Congressional District map slices the Macomb County portion of Grosse Pointe Shores away and assigns it to the neighboring 10th Congressional District which straddles Macomb and Oakland Counties.

Note: The homepage map shows the boundaries of Michigan’s new 13th Congressional District outlined in purple.

Michigan House: 10th District Map

In addition to the Pointes, Michigan’s 10th House District includes Belle Isle, Indian Village and Detroit’s other eastside, shoreline neighborhoods.

The Michigan House of Representatives map assigns Harper Woods to the 11th State House District, which extends from a portion of Detroit northward through Harper Woods and incorporates St. Clair Shores in Macomb County.

Wayne County Commission: 1st District Map

In addition to the Pointes and Harper Woods, Wayne County’s 1st District includes 104 eastside Detroit precincts. Obviously, the Macomb County portion of Grosse Pointe Shores will vote for Macomb County Commissioners (not linked) and not Wayne County Commissioners.
